Our siblings in Christ at First Presbyterian Church are hosting the Interfaith Action of Evanston’s Emergency Shelter from December 29th to January 19th. The Emergency Shelter is now open every night during the heart of winter, regardless of the temperature. One of the opportunities we have at Northminster, as a church that doesn’t physically host the shelter, is to provide volunteers to those churches that do, particularly our sister church, First Pres.
The three volunteer positions that are needed every day at the shelter are:
Morning Cleanup Volunteer: The two morning volunteers will be there to wake up the guests, tear down the rooms including putting away cots, blankets, etc., while ensuring the guests depart in a timely manner so they can get breakfast at the Interfaith Action Hospitality Center at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. This involves being on site from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. (or until all of the cots are put away).
Evening Set Up and Greeting Volunteer: The two evening volunteers will set up cots, put out sheets and blankets, prepare coffee etc., as well as greet and help those guests who are staying the night get settled once the doors open at 9 p.m. This involves being on site from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Overnight Volunteer: This year, Interfaith Action will be providing 2 staff members to stay overnight. But one overnight volunteer is still needed who will assist the staff in dealing with any matters that may arise. Lights are out at 10, and usually the volunteer is able to get some sleep. This involves being on site from 9:00 p.m. to roughly 7:00 a.m. the next day.
If you have not yet been to a shelter training session, contact Pastor Michael and he will make arrangements for any volunteers to receive the necessary training information.
Please help our homeless siblings by volunteering this winter, particularly during this time when First Presbyterian is hosting. You can access the Sign Up Genius for the First Presbyterian weeks at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4bafae2ba2ff2-overnight1. Many of the slots are already filled, but it would be great if we could help fill out their volunteer rosters for these two weeks before they are opened to the regular corps of volunteers.
If you cannot volunteer during those weeks but are interested in other times (the shelter is open every night until mid-March, just at other local faith communities), please contact Pastor Michael.
