Exciting Choral Concert and Hosting Opportunity

Categories: Spire Blog

Greetings Fellow Northminster Friends!

I am excited to tell you about our upcoming collaborative concert and homestay opportunity! Our chancel choir and church community is getting ready to host a fantastic concert on Thursday November 2nd at 7:30 p.m.! The concert features the Jugendkonzertchor zu Chorakademie am Konzerthaus Dortmund Youth Concert Choir from the Choir Academy of the Dortmund Concert House, the Northeastern Illinois University Choirs, and our NPC Chancel Choir!

The concert features music that with an aim for us to see the world through someone else’s eyes in order to foster understanding, empathy, and to call for peace.

The Jugendkonzertchor will be singing wonderful selections from their homeland including Mendelssohn’s that exclaims peace through “Glory to God in the Highest.”

The composer, Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, writes about the meaning of one of the NEIU selections, Wanting Memories, “What was special though was that I am an only child and when my father died and then my mother, and I prepared to sell the house I grew up in, I found bags of photos, letters and other memorabilia – the kind of things especially an only child hopes for … So in a sense, the song was an unconscious wish or prayer that actually came true.” You can see the photos and letters she references on her website.

In addition the NPC Chancel Choir and NEIU is collaborating to perform Bach’s Funeral Cantata “God’s Time is the Best Time,” which is perhaps the most beautiful Cantata he ever wrote.

In order to put on this exciting performance we still need to find homestays for more students. We are looking to find homestays for a total of 64 students and 8 chaperones during the duration that they are in Chicago from Tuesday evening, October 31st through Friday morning, November 3rd.

The responsibilities are simple; provide a place to sleep for our talented visitors each of the three nights, and offer your guests breakfast in the morning. Our guests from Germany will be at the church by 9:30 p.m. each night for pickup and can be dropped off at the church prior to 8 am each morning.

If you are able to host some students please let me know at your earliest convenience with the following information by emailing Christopher Owen, with the following information or filling out the Google Form:

  • Name of all adults in the home
  • Preferred email address
  • Contact phone #
  • Number of students you can host: (2 students per bed; couches or inflatable mattresses work too)
  • Address [## Street, City, Zip Code]:
  • Pets

Thank you for your consideration of hosting some students during this exciting project. Projects like these are such exceptional experiences for the students, church, and community members as we get to create friendships that are intergenerational, international, and intercultural.

This is truly Christ’s Love in action.

Remember to mark your calendars for this event and see you at the concert!
