Northminster is hosting a fantastic concert on Thursday, November 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. The concert features the Jugendkonzertchor zu Chorakademie am Konzerthaus Dortmund (Youth Concert Choir from the Choir Academy of the Dortmund Concert House), the Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) Choirs, and our Northminster Chancel Choir.
The concert features music with an aim for us to see the world through someone else’s eyes in order to foster understanding, empathy, and to call for peace.
The Jugendkonzertchor is singing wonderful selections from their homeland including Mendelssohn’s that exclaims peace through Glory to God in the Highest.
The composer, Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, writes about the meaning of one of the NEIU selections, Wanting Memories: “What was special though was that I am an only child and when my father died and then my mother and I prepared to sell the house I grew up in, I found bags of photos, letters and other memorabilia – the kind of things especially an only child hopes for … So in a sense, the song was an unconscious wish or prayer that actually came true.” You can see the photos and letters she references on her website.
In addition, the Northminster Chancel Choir and NEIU is collaborating to perform Bach’s Funeral Cantata God’s Time is the Best Time, which is perhaps the most beautiful Cantata he ever wrote.
